The 10 Essentials Every Hiker Should Carry

If you spend any time on the trail, you’ve probably heard of the “10 Essentials.” This list was created decades ago by mountaineers and has been updated over the years, but the purpose remains the same: make sure every hiker has the basic gear to stay safe, comfortable, and prepared for the unexpected. Whether you’re heading out for a quick day hike or a multi-day adventure, these items should always be part of your pack.

1. Navigation

A paper map and compass never run out of battery, but a GPS device or offline trail app is also helpful. Always know where you are and where you’re going.

2. Headlamp

Don’t rely on your phone flashlight. A lightweight headlamp with extra batteries can make the difference if you get caught out after dark.

3. Sun Protection

Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat protect against UV rays, which are stronger at higher elevations.

4. First Aid

A small kit with bandages, antiseptic, and blister care is essential. Don’t forget personal medications.

5. Knife or Multi-tool

Useful for gear repairs, food prep, or even emergencies.

6. Fire

Pack waterproof matches, a lighter, or a fire starter. Fire can provide warmth, signal for help, and cook food if necessary.

7. Shelter

Even on a day hike, carry an emergency bivy sack, space blanket, or lightweight tarp. It’s a backup if you can’t make it back before nightfall.

8. Extra Food

Always pack more than you think you’ll need. Energy bars, nuts, or jerky are compact and keep well.

9. Extra Water

Bring enough for the hike plus a way to treat water from natural sources such as filters, purification tablets, or a UV purifier.

10. Extra Clothing

Weather changes quickly in the mountains. Pack an insulating layer and a rain jacket, even if the forecast looks clear.

Final Thoughts

The 10 Essentials aren’t about carrying a heavy backpack.   They’re about being prepared. With lightweight, modern gear, you can pack smart without adding too much bulk. Think of these items as your safety net: you may not need them every hike, but when you do, you’ll be glad they’re there.
